CHARACTER
Character Name: Reno
Character Age: Mid to late twenties.
Canon: Final Fantasy VII
Canon Point: Advent Children
History: Gotcha right here!
Personality:
Reno shows alot of faith in the Turks' abilities. And, despite the coldness he can display, he does have a heart and cares deeply for the people he becomes attached to. Such as when the Turks are told that Shotgun was caught in the destruction of the Corel Reactor and that she probably wasn't still alive, Reno was undoubtedly the first to say, "No, she is definitely still alive. After all, she's a Turk." And when Zirconiaide is defeated, with Shotgun surely getting caught in the shockwave and aftermath, Reno yells out for her, concerned for her safety and clearly hurt that she didn't survive.
Reno is not an easily fazed person when it comes to unexpected information. Such as being unperturbed by threats and danger, approaching such things with a casual attitude often saying something along the lines of, 'might as well.' He has a very direct approach to his missions. He is also not bothered when it is revealed that Rufus is the mole that was leaking ShinRa's information to AVALANCHE, he just gives a simple, "Well, that would make sense." Almost as though shrugging it off. And when Rufus orders the disposal of the Turks, he is just as unaffected, giving a casual, "We're in the frying pan, now, boys." And is prepared to defend himself and the others. But, the tables turn quickly as AVALANCHE betrays Rufus, and Reno, along with the other Turks, quickly move to defend the Vice President, not at all offended by Rufus' betrayal. They are extremely loyal to him. Or when they face off against Cloud later on, after Rufus gets caught in the explosion of ShinRa corp after the fight with Weapon, Reno says, "I know we have a weird relationship, but... we have to end this, like Turks." Indicating that he doesn't want to have to follow through with it, but duty calls.
And speaking of loyalty, the Turks all share a level to Veld, that they hold even higher than Rufus. When they find out that Elfe (Felicia) is Veld's long-lost daughter, Reno and the other Turks are completely supportive and urge Veld to follow after AVALANCHE to get her back. And Reno tells him, "You don't want this to be the last chance you get to see your daughter." And the Turks refuse to assasinate him, despite their orders; they even go out of their way to help Veld time and again. And, when Tseng executed Veld, Reno was heartbroken over it, collapsing to his knees and begging it to be a lie, asking for reassurance that it wasn't real. When Tseng doesn't confirm him, he yells in exasperation.
Reno seems to be exceptional friends with Rude, often with them having quite the background with, and a firm understanding of, each other. Rude even claims at some point, "I've known you for a long time, I know how you think." Denoting that Reno is predictable. And Reno retaliates with, "Hey! I'm way more unpredictable than that." But Reno shows a higher level of both nosiness and caring for Rude as well. When Reno finds out that Rude has been seeing a girlfriend (Chelsea) after work hours, Reno takes it upon himself to spy on the two, hiding in the corner to keep himself unnoticed.
When Chelsea gets up to leave, Reno feels as if something is off about her, and promptly follows her, where he finds out that she is a spy hired by AVALANCHE. He eavesdrops on her conversation with the AVALANCHE members. He finds her unusual when she lies about not having an opportunity to tap a bug into Rude's phone, when he obviously witnessed her having such an opportunity. After he listens to all of it, he becomes concerned, worried that Rude has 'fallen for trouble.'
When it comes up thereafter that Rude says he has 'other things' after work hours, Reno calls him out on seeing Chelsea, saying, "I wouldn't go to see her if I were you. She's..." In which Rude cuts him off saying he knows. When Rude leaves, Reno gets a call to a last minute job. With him being worried for Rude, he says he'll finish it quickly so that he can get back to Rude. And when Rude is left standing beneath the lit up tree all by himself, stood up, Reno shows up, asking if Rude is alright because he doesn't look so good. When Rude tells him to shut up, Reno pauses for a moment. He then says, "It's cold out. What the Hell are we doing in a place like this?" Then he turns to Rude and says a rather gentle, "Let's go home."
And Rude also humours Reno, such as in Advent Children, where he promises the explosives are the best in the company. Reno goes, "Oh, so you made this." And Rude promises that, if nothing else, it's flashy. Reno seems to appreciate the thought and greatly enjoys Rude's efforts with the bomb. Rude also says that Reno's the sort of guy that just does whatever he wants, after an encounter with Shears. And Reno is not offended by this. He simply says, "And what would you have done if I hadn't?"
Reno also displays a moral compass. This can be seen throughout the entire Final Fantasy VII franchise. Such as when Nibleheim is burned to the ground and they're ordered to round up the survivors and take them to the Mansion for experimentation by Hojo, Reno speaks up. He says, "People are going to notice if an entire village goes missing." And he is told that the employees of ShinRa will replace the villagers roles. And when Hojo leaves, Reno shakes his head going, "We can't keep doing stuff like this, you know." Or when they are trying to evacuate the sectors in the course of Meteor's approach, he refuses to give up when he finds out that some people are still stuck in the rubble of Sector 5. Also exemplified in Advent Children, where he goes back to pick up a brainwashed child to get him out of the line of fire from Bahamut SIN. Despite the kid shoving fingers up his nose, he still remains intent on getting the children out of there, and even protects them from an explosion with his own body.
Or such as when Elena and Yuffie are kidnapped, Reno doesn't hesitate forming an alliance with Cloud, saying they won't bother each other while they try to get the two girls back. He and Cloud don't call it cooperating, but it shows that Reno will put aside matters when something more important to him is on the line. However, he also only drops a hint on where to find the girls, instead of being direct. With a simple clue, Reno goes off without any further information. When Cloud and the others arrive, he takes charge and tells them to split into groups of two. He confirms that Cloud can do whatever he wants, just not to hurt Elena, and promises the same respect for Yuffie. And when they receive the call to eliminate Cloud and the others, with Cloud's presence right there, he simply claims, "We're off duty, we'll have to do it tomorrow," and lets them escape for another day.
He's also generally fairly flexible with certain details in plans. Such as when Shotgun asked to let Nanaki partake in the right before having to take Nanaki back to Shinra, he simply says, "Whatever. If he gets away, it's your ass that'll pay for it. Besides, it only happens every fifty years anyway, right? Kind of a once in a lifetime opportunity."
Later on, in Advent Children, he discusses what ShinRa has done to the world with Rude. He says he's surprised at how many came back to work for ShinRa, calling it dedication. And he wonders if and how they could ever atone for what ShinRa, seeming to genuinely regret it on some level, despite that he is still loyal to Rufus and ShinRa.
Reno can be teasing and snarky. Such as when he's talking to Rude about feelings. He asks Rude who he likes, finding out it's Tifa. And Reno's like, "Oh, but Elena likes you." And he's told that Elena actually likes Tseng. And Reno just digresses into who likes who, however none of his pairings match up. It seems like he's just in favour of certain couples but, more likely, he's just teasing all of them. Or when Tseng praises Reno's and Rude's skills in the combat against Scarlet's machines en masse, Reno says, "Flattery, Tseng? We're barely getting started."
Reno does show his levels of intelligence, despite his laziness, and is all about the plan. He knows how to work with tact and formation and the best paths that will help him and others adhere to the rules of the mission. A somewhat outside-the-box individual, he's able to absorb information and concoct solutions on the go. It doesn't mean they always succeed, but he certainly seems to take failure in stride. He even tells Shotgun, when she comes out of her coma, "Don't underestimate our intelligence network." Which says that they figured out what AVALANCHE was using Elfe for when Shotgun was unable to tell them herself. He also understands the inner workings of ShinRa very well. Reno also takes extreme pride in being a Turk and doing his work.
Reno can come off lazy, especially when he's off duty. He definitely likes to relax. He'll opt for napping and demand not to be disturbed. Or when Elena prepares to fight Cloud and the others upon showing up at the Turtle's Paradise, Reno calls her out on it, saying "We're taking our vacation and resting up from our work." And further condescends her by saying, "Now our vacation is ruined. Even the booze tastes bad, now." Causing Elena to back down from fighting. Reno also says that, even though there have been rough times in being a Turk, all in all, he's glad he is one. "I even got to meet a bunch of wing nuts like you."
He does appear to really enjoy his alcohol and gets particularly annoyed when people try to interrupt him from drinking, throwing low-grade insults and just telling them off for bothering him. "A professional doesn't sacrifice himself for his job; that's just a fool." When Elena runs off and Rude begins to worry, Reno is very casual about it saying, "Relax. She's not a child. Let her have her way, now...."
At times, Reno can be driven to get even, or even be sadistic in nature. Such circumstances include teaming up with Rude and hunting down Shears after he defeated both Reno and Rude, to show Shears that he won't be taken out so easily. Or when he got put out of commission by Cloud and the others, he eventually returns with a new weapon to use against them and take care of them for good. Even further exemplified when using Rude's bombs against Loz and Yazoo, he smirks as they meet the explosion. He revels in making his opponents lose. Such as when dropping Corneo off of a cliff, he taunts him by asking him why Corneo thinks he teamed up with AVALANCHE to find Corneo, and then gives him a series of answer to choose from. When Corneo says, "To win," Reno tells him he's wrong and drops him off the cliff. And then clarifies that the answer was none of the above - the actual answer was "Because it's our job."
Reno is reputably fast, being able to duck and hide from groups of AVALANCHE (when under the orders of the new Turk representative to not attack, obeying his orders without question and attacking only in self defense). Or even being able to scale up the side of a building to catch Yazoo into combat. He leans toward individuality in his jobs, but is entirely supportive and adaptable to teamwork and believes that everyone has a job to do. He also recognises when he should back down from a fight, when he's losing and fast. He'll retreat as needed but still claime to be "victorious." However, he can also lean toward being a bit of a hypocrite, such as when he steps all over Aeris' flowers and then tells the SOLDIERs not to step on the flowers. He's critiscized back by all of them for it.
He is blunt and also not above mocking his jobs, depending on his levels of frustration. From mild annoyance to a full-blown temper, Reno consistantly shows how he's feeling and when. He defends his job title when Zack rushes to help Cissnei, by stopping Zack and saying that Sector 8 is the Turk's jurisdiction. Then he tells Tseng to hurry up and give the order so he can continue doing his job. Or when he's waiting on Tseng and Elena to retrieve Jenova's head, he impatiently utters, "Just hurry up and grab it already."
He tends to speak in slang and, though creative and freespirited, has been known to say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Such as when he tried to coax Cloud to help Rufus and the Turks again, he said, "We can rebuild ShinRa." Which, ultimately made Cloud refuse the offer completely.
Overall, he tends to be honest and teasing, though sometimes vindictive. He is loyalty bound, and has a hierarchy of that loyalty, for who comes first, second, and so on down to the last. He can be cooperative, but mostly tends toward his own measures, and tends to drift on the lazy side when he doesn't have to follow through with duty. He claims that a man doesn't sacrifice himself for a job, that's just a fool, and seems to adhere exceptionally well to this motto.
Inventory: His baton and the clothes on his back.
Abilities:
-High tolerance for physical damage: Can withstand and survive above normal capacity. From skidding facefirst on roads to being slammed into objects from a far distance, the physical side effects are much lower than a normal person who would have faced the same issues. (Usually just scrapes and no broken bones.)
-Dexterity: Is fast and has additional skills in such. For example, being able to scale a building in short order to reach Yazoo. His speed is mentioned frequently throughout the FFVII universe.
-Close combat: Reno excels at close combat skills, and obviously prefers it. Combined with his dexterity, he's an agile, rapid fighter. He does, however, know how to wield longer range weaponry, such as shooting from a helicopter or using Materia. He is also left-handed.
Flaws: Reno is cocky and can border the sadistic in his actions. While he is duty driven, he can be very lazy and have a casual attitude gearing towards doing whatever he likes. He is brash and temperamental and his loyalty seems to be based on a hierarchy - ranging from person he's most loyal to down to the least loyal, and will neglect all others under the higher one if it comes into play. (Such as ignoring the President's orders to kill Veld because he is more loyal to Veld than ShinRa Corp.) He likes explosions and can enjoy being a problem. He also really enjoys his alcohol and cannot be bothered to go back to work when he's off duty.
